The RAC says the average price of diesel on UK forecourts has reached an all-time high, with reports of it nearing £2 a litre in some places. This week the story isn't fuel in general — it's diesel specifically, and the gap between where you fill up.

Why diesel is leading the rise, not petrol

Petrol and diesel come from the same barrel but not from the same market. Diesel sits in the middle distillate pool alongside heating oil, jet fuel and marine gasoil, and that pool tightens as the northern hemisphere moves into autumn. Add the wider crude backdrop — headlines this month have pointed to oil above $100 and to stalled US–Iran diplomacy keeping markets nervous, with Australian pump prices near six-month highs and the UAE flagging another possible October increase — and distillate is where the pressure lands first.

The UK is unusually exposed to this. A large share of the car fleet, and effectively all of the haulage and agricultural sector, runs on diesel, and Britain imports a significant amount of its diesel rather than refining it all domestically. So when international distillate cracks widen, UK forecourts feel it more sharply than a petrol-dominated market would.

One thing worth repeating: pump prices follow crude with a lag of roughly one to two weeks, and then get filtered through fuel duty, VAT and each site's own margin. That means today's record reflects decisions made on wholesale markets a while back, and it also means any easing in crude wouldn't show up on the forecourt immediately. Talking about pressure and direction of travel is honest; predicting next week's pence-per-litre is not.

The part you actually control: which forecourt

National averages make a decent headline but they are not what you pay. The reason regional "cheapest places to buy petrol and diesel" round-ups — like the recent one for Pembrokeshire — get read so widely is that the spread between the cheapest and dearest station within a normal driving radius is often larger than the increase that just made the news. Supermarket sites, high-volume independents and stations on competitive stretches of road behave very differently from motorway services or rural single-site forecourts.

That spread is the only lever most drivers have left, because duty and VAT are fixed and crude is out of anyone's hands. Checking before you drive rather than filling on autopilot is the difference between absorbing a record and partly sidestepping it.
