How to find the cheapest gas in Canada

Two stations a few blocks apart routinely differ by 10 to 15 cents a litre, and two provinces can differ by more than 30 — most of it tax, not oil. On a 50-litre fill-up the local gap alone is $5 to $8, every time.

Where the prices come from

Québec is the one province with a real per-station price feed. Since 1 April 2026 every retailer has had to report its price to the Régie de l'énergie under article 67.1 of the Loi sur les produits pétroliers, and that is where the official numbers in Refil come from.

No other province requires it. Outside Québec the stations come from OpenStreetMap and the prices come from drivers reporting what they paid, which is the same way Refil handles Switzerland. New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island add a regulated weekly maximum set by their energy boards — a ceiling, not a fixed price, so a station can and does sell below it.

Nova Scotia and Newfoundland also regulate, but by zone rather than by province, and no station-level tag records which zone a site belongs to. Rather than assign a maximum to the wrong station, Refil leaves those two out of the regulated display.

Prices are quoted in cents per litre across the country. Refil shows dollars — $1.529/L, not 152.9.

How to actually spend less

• Know what your province adds. Excise, provincial fuel tax, carbon pricing and — in Metro Vancouver, Montréal and Victoria — a transit levy stack on top of the same wholesale litre. That is why a national average tells you nothing useful about your own street.
• In Québec, check the board before you turn in. The Régie feed means the price you see in Refil is the price the retailer declared, not an estimate.
• In New Brunswick and PEI, remember the posted maximum is a ceiling. Stations that sell under it exist, and they are exactly the ones worth finding.
• Crossing into the US for gas rarely works out once the exchange rate and the litre-to-gallon conversion are done honestly. Compare in dollars per litre, which is what Refil shows.
• Loyalty programmes can beat the sign. Add yours in Refil and the ranking uses what you actually pay, not the posted price.
