Québec now publishes every station's gas price

On 1 April 2026 Québec became the only place in Canada where you can know, before leaving the house, what a specific gas station is charging. The rest of the country still runs on guesswork and crowdsourcing.

What the rule actually requires

Article 67.1 of the Loi sur les produits pétroliers obliges every retailer of petroleum products in Québec to report the price it charges to the Régie de l'énergie, which publishes it.

It is a reporting duty, not a price control. The Régie does not set what a station may charge — it makes public what the station has chosen to charge, which is a very different and much more useful thing.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Before it, comparing meant driving past and reading the sign, or relying on other drivers to report. Both are slow and both go stale. A mandatory feed means the comparison is current and complete at the same time.

It also means the comparison is fair: a station cannot be absent from the list because nobody happened to drive past it.

The rest of the country

No other province requires station-level reporting. Outside Québec, Refil builds the station list from OpenStreetMap and fills the prices from drivers who report what they paid — the same approach it uses in Switzerland, which has no official prices either.

New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island add a weekly regulated maximum, which is a ceiling rather than a price, so a cheap station there is still worth finding.

How to use it

In Québec, check before you turn in rather than at the pump: the number in the app is the number the retailer declared. Outside Québec, look at how old a reported price is before you drive to it.

And if you report a price yourself after filling up outside Québec, you are the reason the next driver sees a current number.
