Is warehouse-club and unbranded gas worth it?

Published on 2026-06-08

Costco, Sam's Club, BJ's, and unbranded retailers like Murphy USA often post the lowest prices in town. The big question: is the gas as good as Shell, Exxon, or Chevron?

Is cheaper gas lower quality?

No. All gasoline sold in the US has to meet the same federal and state quality standards, and most fuel comes from the same pipelines and regional terminals regardless of the brand on the sign. Many warehouse clubs and unbranded stations draw from those exact same sources.

The main difference is the detergent additive package. So-called Top Tier gasoline carries higher detergent levels to keep engines cleaner, and several warehouse clubs, including Costco, sell Top Tier fuel. The base gasoline still meets the same spec everywhere.

Why are warehouse clubs and unbranded stations cheaper?

High volume, thin margins, and gas used as a draw to get members and shoppers in the door. Clubs make their money on memberships and store sales, so they can run the pumps lean. Those savings land at the pump.

The trade-offs are real: warehouse-club gas usually requires a paid membership, the stations can have long lines, and hours are limited to club hours.

How much can you save?

Versus a premium-branded station, warehouse-club and unbranded gas can run 10-30 cents per gallon cheaper, sometimes more. On a 15-gallon fill that's roughly $1.50-$4.50 each time, which adds up fast if you fill up weekly.

Just make sure the savings clear the membership fee. If you only fill up occasionally, an unbranded high-volume retailer with no membership may beat a club.

FAQ

Does warehouse-club gas hurt your engine?

No. It meets the same quality standards as branded gas, and many clubs sell Top Tier fuel with extra detergents. The difference is additives and service, not the base gasoline.

Is Costco gas worth the membership?

If you fill up regularly, the per-gallon savings can easily cover the membership over a year, especially combined with the store savings. If you rarely buy gas, an unbranded retailer like Murphy USA may be cheaper with no fee.

Is Top Tier gas worth paying more for?

Top Tier gas has more detergent additives that help keep your engine clean. The good news is several low-cost retailers sell it, so you often don't have to pay a premium brand price to get it.
